Bring on the Finals
Last Saturday the Berlin Crocodiles hosted Tournament number 9 of the AFLG at Schiller Park. Disappointingly Cologne forfeited the day before leaving Berlin Crocodiles, Hamburg Swans and Dresden Wolves to do battle on the last match day before the finals. The weather was overcast with spurts of sunshine mixed with drizzling rain but it didn’t stop the people of Berlin making their way out to cheer on Berlin’s number 1 sporting team.
Game 1: Berlin Crocodiles 9.6 (60) def Dresden Wolves 4.5 (29)
The first game of the day saw the Crocs up against the ever improving Dresden and after Colognes forfeit the Crocs could secure a finals birth with a win. The Berlin Crocodiles started with a bang as 2 quick center clearances led to quick goals from Dingo but the Wolves fought back quickly to level the scores with 2 of their own. The Berlin Crocs were looking a shadow of their best and it was left to first gamer Simon to lift the team with fierce tackling and pack marks showing that he has a bright future. They only took a lead into half time through some champagne football from the South Australian connection of Jan and Rowan linking multiple handballs together before Dingo got on the end to send the Crocs a couple kicks up at the break. After a rev up from coach Con the Defence got on top after being well beaten for the first time all season in the first half. This was again led by skipper Bart whose goal line 2nd 3rd and 4th effort late in the game will be talked about for a long time. If Rowan would have kicked straight the margin might have blown out more but the boys secured themselves a finals birth. Dingo was best on ground by a mile with his 4 goals and Soda after being beaten in the ruck in the previous encounter showed all class to dominate the middle. Woodsy also kept up his career best from and was everywhere even kicking goal of the day with a left foot snap out of the pack.
Goals: Dingo 4, Rowan 2, Haroon 1, Jan.M 1, Woodsy 1
Best: Dingo, Soda, Woodsy
Game 2: Berlin Crocodiles 10.9 (69) def Hamburg Swans 4.1 (25)
After securing a finals spot it was now a game to decide who would finish 3rd for the season. If the boys were not ready for the game the pre-game speech from the inspirational captain definitely woke them up and they were never going to lose after that. The coach called for 2 way running from the midfielders and they didn’t disappoint, putting in a master class display running the Hamburg boys off their feet. Soda and Handsome were dominate in the ruck and the Berlin Crocodiles mids Petey, Will, Patrick and Woods broke the game open with clearance after clearance. Jan was at his sweeping best setting up plays and getting forward to kick an important goal just before the half time siren. One supporter even mentioned they thought they saw him win a hard ball. At one stage in the first quarter the Crocs forward pressure led to multiple shots as Hamburg had no answer of how to clear the defence. The second half was junk time and Dingo and Rowan were the beneficiaries of solid defence and a dominant midfield to finish with 7 majors between them.
Goals: Rowan 5, Dingo 2, Jan.M 1, Woodsy 1, Soda 1
Best: Jan.M, Pete, Rowan

Next week sees the Crocs off to Frankfurt for the finals. They will play the Hamburg Pirates who they have lost to twice this season both by under a kick. If they manage to win that they will meet either the Munich Kangaroos or the Hamburg Swans.
